Daily Previews and Reviews of the Week’s Events
It’s the time of year again, when the weather turns crisp and brisk in New York City, leaves begin to fall to the ground, visions of the underworld start to surface in storefronts, and the streets brim with more cool kids than there’s even room for on any given normal weekend in downtown Manhattan. Yes, it’s the CMJ Music Marathon, 2008 style, where your pricey badge will mean next to nothing and you’ll be left out in the cold at least a few times wondering if you have time to hop on the train to get to Brooklyn for that other show. But, you know what: None of that matters because it’s New York fuckin’ City, and for five days straight, no matter what, you’re going to consume tons of beer, tons of bands, and probably walk away from it all with some sort of cold that’ll put you out for the week following, all in the name of experiencing sounds from the best up-and-coming bands in the country and beyond in one of the greatest places in the world to see live music.
Crawdaddy! is tossing itself into the mayhem of this year’s festival to check out panels, films, and the music being offered up. Each page here represents one full day of the festival, where we’ve provided some preview highlights we’re looking forward to, and then we’ll be reporting back each following morning with what we saw the previous day before. No real agenda, no real cause. We’re gonna go with the flow and see how we emerge from the festival insanity that is CMJ.

Happy One-Year Anniversary: A Time to Celebrate and Look Back

There’s something to be said for taking time out from the blur of the information superhighway to appreciate the initial ideas, attitude, and processes surrounding the onset of a particular thing’s creation—in this case, rock music and the writing that followed it—and revisit what it meant at a time when it was operating on the edge of popular culture as it was coming to exist. Crawdaddy! is to be appreciated for this very thing: It’s the first publication to lay down a foundation for open, intelligent dialogue about music and culture, which ultimately became an enduring lexicon that has filtered into the fabric of society and continues on today, in one form or another, relaying tales of this massive cultural explosion called rock ‘n’ roll, both past and present.
Bringing Crawdaddy! back to an online audience was a call to look back and summon the spirit that exists within the offbeat, upbeat, yet honest, existential, and inspiring pages of the original. To present a publication with writing that appreciates, celebrates, and deconstructs taste making rock music in all its forms. To find linear themes throughout these generations and to use one in thinking more deeply about the other. To bolster long form, subjective rock criticism—a dying breed in both print and online media—which we realize is a probable risk and somewhat idiotic, but anything worth doing can usually be simultaneously categorized as risky and idiotic. I’m sure plenty of folks told a 17-year-old Paul Williams that it was risky and idiotic to quit college after only one year to run off to NYC to start up a rock magazine. I love it that that didn’t stop him.
An Indie Culture Celebration: Noise Pop 2008

It’s that time again… Noise Pop time! The best thing about this festival is that you can take one glance at the schedule and think “meh,” but then if you really dig you begin to realize that there are talented, up-and-coming bands to be experienced each and every night. That’s what this festival is all about: the unknown… even if there are a slew of excellent mid-level bands to see. To take some of the pressure off we’ve mapped out the entire week for you with our picks and recommendations. Be sure to stop back daily for live show updates and photos from events.
A Very Fantastical 2007 Year End Extravaganza

It’s been one hell of a year, that’s for sure. We successfully breathed life back into this renowned rock magazine, while hopefully salvaging a dying breed of literate, long-form rock writing that comes from a fan’s perspective. We’ve learned much and only expect things to get better and better from this steady start. And, even though we weren’t around for all of 2007, we still have some things to say about it. So, grab a six pack, settle in, and and enjoy “A Very Fantastical 2007 Year End Extravaganza” featuring fun list-y type stuff and year-end round-ups along with some holiday-themed articles. We’ve been extremely proud to be a part of the rebirth of Crawdaddy! and look forward to doing more rock writing deeds in 2008.
Happy Holidays to you and yours,
The C! Team

A Very Fantastical 2008 Year End Extravaganza
by: The Editors
Well, it’s time to look back through the musical events of 2008 and try to remember what the hell even happened. While rock magazines folded, music sites collapsed, a bunch of people got sued and/or shut down by the RIAA, and major labels are still relatively fuzzy on the details of how letting people hear music on their own terms might actually benefit their business model, somewhere in the midst of all this silly chaos, some music happened. Remember that stuff? It’s pretty good, especially for getting over all the bullshit life hands out.
So, that’s what this double issue is all about. There’s a ton of stuff to get through, but all in all we really cover a major portion of 2008. To celebrate another year gone by in the fastidious world of online music publishing, let’s kick things off with our own little handy rundown of topics of conversation that happened behind the scenes here at Crawdaddy! HQ.
