YouTube Agrees to Pay Indie Musicians In Some Kind of Capacity
Apparently, you have to sign up for this, but if you are an indie band and you wanna make some extra scratch, you can now find a way to do that on YouTube. They say:
“So whether you make hip-hop, folk, noise-rock, jazz or a genre of your own invention, we are looking for all types of original music video content. One thing to keep in mind is that right now this program only supports video content by U.S.-based artists, though there are plans to roll out the program more widely in the future.”

Who Covered It Best: “Raining Blood”
Tori Amos did. Seriously. She did Slayer proud with this one, I think. It’s disturbing and sad and completely paying homage to the death metal band’s signature tune in her own way. It may not be heavy like Slayer-heavy, but it’s still way heavy.

R.I.P. Alex Chilton, 1950-2010

[via The Commercial Appeal] Wow, this is really sad. It’s been reported that Alex Chilton, cult hero, legendary rock musician, pop hit maker, and perhaps one of the last true men of mystery, of bands such as Panther Burns, the Box Tops, and Big Star, has passed away today in a hospital in New Orleans. He was 59, and the cause is believed to have been from a heart attack.
John Fry, Ardent founder and engineer to most Big Star sessions said this: “I’m crushed. We’re all just crushed… This sudden death experience is never something that you’re prepared for. And yet it occurs.”
Chilton was a tremendous talent and he will be sorely missed by all of those who loved his music. If you’re out drinking tonight, pour one out for him.
After the jump, view a video of Alex Chilton on a 1985 installment of 120 Minutes. read more
Clap On, Clap Off… the Clapper: A Playlist of Songs Featuring Hand Claps
It’s not everything, but it’s something… a smattering of songs featuring hand claps for you to enjoy. Some are outright, other subtle, some are hard, while others are soft, some only appear during a bridge, and others lace the entire song. Many are made by real hands, but I suspect some are not (”Private Eyes”???). But no matter where the hand claps sit in these songs, they are always so good.
Best Song Ever Wednesday: The Pogues, “Streams of Whiskey”
Do I even need to explain why this is the best song ever? Fuck, this is such a good song.
“Oh the words that he spoke,
Seemed the wisest of philosophies.
‘There’s nothing ever gained,
By a wet thing called a tear.’
When the world is too dark,
And I need the light inside of me,
I walk into a bar
And drink 15 pints of beer.”
Amen. See you at the bar!
David Grohl Overdoses on Caffeine
Them Crooked Vultures recently made yuks about how drummer Dave Grohl, the biggest guy in rock ‘n’ roll, was “rushed to the doctor” because he’d overdosed on caffeine. Anyway, now there’s a pretty entertaining video called “Fresh Pots!” that explains Grohl’s coffee addiction, which also features Josh Homme and John Paul Jones.
If you’ve ever seen Grohl perform live, you know… his energy level is off the charts. Whatever of his music, he looks like fun.
Devendra Banhart Video for “Baby” Features GZA and Fabrizio
“Baby”, the new video from Devendra Banhart, is a happy-go-lucky song from last year’s What Will We Be, and it’s a really bizarre journey through some world inspired by LSD and cartoons. And it features the GZA, Fabrizio Moretti from the Strokes (who he mentioned collaborating with recently), and MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden. There’s a weird part where they travel in a cylinder and enter something that looks like, um, something. Just watch and you’ll see what I mean.
Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” Gets an Indie-Pop Remake
Last week, Lady Gaga and Beyonce premiered their 9-minute-long Quentin Taratino-inspired video for “Telephone”, and today you can watch the most adorable Pamplamoose give the mainstream pop song an indie-pop remake. In other news, “Telephone” has been stuck in my head for the last week. This isn’t helping.
Pamplamoose also did a remake of Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”, which you can see after the jump. read more
Wayne Coyne Makes an Appearance on Extreme Makeover: Home Addition

[screen grab and article via Pitchfork] What a guy. Wayne Coyne, of Oklahoma and fearless freak band the Flaming Lips, made a brief appearance on this past Sunday’s episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, in which an Oklahoma family with a boy recovering from a heart transplant gets the house of their dreams. Actually rapper Xzhibit shows up throughout the show, but Coyne makes an appearance at the end, carrying an armload of sod as the end credits roll and “Do You Realize?” plays, as a volunteer to help out people of his community. The show is a real tear-jerker, and you can (and should) watch it here.

Watch the New Video from Andrew WK, “I’m a Vagabond”
by: Jocelyn Hoppa
I love this guy. “I’m a Vagabond”, a righteous party-rock ballad, is the new video to celebrate Andrew WK’s upcoming release for the double album Close Calls with Brick Walls / Mother of Mankind, which is set to hit the streets next week on March 23rd.
Andrew WK recorded Close Calls with Brick Walls back in 2004-2005, but it only saw a limited release in Japan and Korea; interesting that four years later it is seeing its US debut. Mother of Mankind features rarities spanning his career.
