Andrew Bird by Ashley Beliveau

Andrew Bird
July 31, 2010
Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI

Andrew Bird is a performer everyone must see. He presents his music with a theatricality that complements his erratic playing of multiple instruments. The crowd was absolutely crazy for his dizzyingly profound whistling and gathered as the sun came out for his performance (as you can see in the reflection of his sunglasses).

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
March 19, 2010
SXSW Showdown at Cedar Street, Austin

Of all the shows I saw during the chaos of SXSW, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was staggeringly different… and my favorite. The trio has a cohesive style, both visually and musically. Their performance at Cedar Street was a perfect representation of American rock ‘n’ roll: Fast, loud, original, back-to-basics songs… a captivating force the crowd flooded the small venue to see.

Elvis Perkins In Dearland
August 1, 2010
Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI

Elvis Perkins in Dearland have been my Newport favorites since I started photographing the festival last year. They also put on the best surprise parade I have ever seen. Their set started with favorites such as “Shampoo” and “All the Night Without Love” as the afternoon lingered on. Elvis Perkins’ hauntingly melodic songs were a perfect match to the atmosphere. The set ended when the What Cheer Brigade joined them on stage for “Doomsday”, and then jumped towards the people dancing in the aisles and carried out the rest of the song amid the fans that followed them around Fort Adams.

Ray Davies by Ashley Beliveau

Ray Davies
March 18, 2010
La Zona Rosa, Austin

When I heard that Ray Davies would be playing a show during SXSW, I had to be there. One of the greatest frontmen ever, he does not hold back or disappoint. He sang a run-through of Kinks’ songs to the crammed crowd. The lighting was a perfect psychedelic accent to the candid storytelling of Davies, who introduced each song (the classics and a large amount of new material) with a personal touch. He is amazing.

Ra Ra Riot
March 20, 2010
Club de Ville, Austin

Ra Ra Riot played an exclusive set, one which people were arguing in the street to get into, as the weekend of SXSW was in full force. There is a reason people would fight to get into this show. The band is a fresh, multi-instrumental group of talented musicians. They were so fun to photograph. The lighting added a strange prismatic presence to the performance. As they played “Can You Tell”, the crisp March night brought in just the right amount of breeze for the packed crowd.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings by Ashley Beliveau

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
August 1, 2010
Newport Folk Festival, Newport, RI

Sharon Jones is a perfect soul, funk, and R&B performer. Her set opened with the same pomp and circumstance that James Brown would have had for his stage introduction. The band backs up her amazing dance moves and driving soulful voice with complete class. Being a young photographer, it is the kind of show I never thought I would see, but thankfully Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are bringing it back home.

Blitzen Trapper by Ben Jay

Blitzen Trapper
June 16, 2010
Webster Hall, New York

Having shot mostly indie concerts during the past few months, photographing experimental-folk rockers (imagine Wilco, but with heavier guitar) Blitzen Trapper was quite a treat, mostly because I was able to get a few great guitar solo shots, which are usually few and far between. Singer/guitarist Eric Earley played the part of the dignified, but energetic frontman — running around during solos, without going too crazy. This photo, in my opinion, best captures Earley’s energy and focus, while the black and white captures the concert’s raw feel.

The New Pornographers
June 19, 2010
Terminal 5, New York

Canadian indie-powerpop supergroup the New Pornographers are one of the most fun bands of the past decade, while featuring some of the most talented songwriters and instrumentalists around. Singer Neko Case, also known for her prolific alt-folk solo career, is one of the band’s most essential organs, adding remarkable depth and emotion to their music. Here, I snapped Case during one of the few serene moments of the band’s characteristically energetic live show, capturing her alone in the spotlights. She stands out brilliantly on her own while still working wonders with the rest of the New Pornographers.
