PJ Harvey by Brian Birzer
PJ Harvey
SXSW, Austin TX
March 21, 2009
By Brian Birzer
The PJ Harvey photos I took on Saturday night, March 21st, in a lot of ways were the payoff for the week of chaos that was SXSW 2009. Typically after a week of sleep deprivation, substance depletion/abuse, and strained tolerance for hipsters, I usually have a sort of out-of-body experience as the last few hours roll in, and this year was no different. Polly Jean was a radiant being on the stage, and she really made the whole musical pilgrimage worth it. Rolling Stone and SXSWorld both ended up using this photo.

Raymond Pettibon by Brian Birzer
Raymond Pettibon

By Brian Birzer
I met Raymond Pettibon at the Rock Paper Scissors show in Santa Monica on May 1st of last year. Other luminaries at that show included Mike Watt, Flea, Lee Renaldo, and Gibby Haynes. If you’ve ever bought any seminal punk rock on the SST label, you’ve seen Pettibon’s work: The simple black and white illustration adorning classic album covers from Black Flag, the Minutemen, and fIREHOSE. His illustrations are hitting and brilliant metaphors for the scene that was the beginning of indie rock in So Cal in the ‘80s.

Chhom Nimol from Dengue Fever by Brian Birzer
Chhom Nimol from Dengue Fever
(and her dress collection)
Austin, TX
April 27, 2009
By Brian Birzer
Chhom Nimol is the singer of Los Angeles based Dengue Fever. With influences such as the Ventures, Charles Mingus, Blondie, and Os Mutantes, they have a retro sound that’s also really fun. This assignment was part of a series of artists and their collections. Nimol (as she is referred to) doesn’t speak a lot of English, but her manager pulled off the translation duties enough to help compose the shot with her vintage dress collection in the crowded hotel room.

Scott Weiland

By Brian Birzer
I took an assignment from Rolling Stone to cover the opening night of Scott Weiland’s solo tour a the beginning of 2009, which was shortly after he left Velvet Revolver. I remember Weiland showing up 10 minutes after he was schedule to go on stage, so the tour manager gave me about 90 seconds with him. Even among the chaos of being late for opening night he came across as a very nice fellow, albeit edgy. I also enjoyed meeting his guitarist Doug Gruene, from the Crystal Method productions.

The Flaming Lips are theatrical, and as such, always a gift to photographers everywhere. I remember this unannounced show at the now defunct Waterloo Brewery at the beginning of SXSW 2006. I was on assignment for BBC Radio 1 to cover their showcase the following night (that ended up being too crowded to shoot). I remember Peaches came out at the encore of this set and covered Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”—even wilder than the version they played with Chan Marshall for the ACL TV show.
