Kinks’ Schoolboys in Disgrace to be Made Into Movie
Another inevitable movie is on the way, though it’s inevitable for very different reasons. Bobcat Goldthwait–yes, the crazy-voiced guy from the Police Academy movies, who really ought to be known for his directorial debut/1991 tour de force Shakes the Clown (tagline: “Loved by children. Desired by women. Adored by bartenders everywhere”), will be adding another monument to his legacy with a film musical based on The Kinks‘ 1975 album, Schoolboys in Disgrace. Ray Davies has signed on as Executive Producer.
Goldthwaite has written the script, which tells the story of a trouble-making schoolboy who transforms into the supervillain known as Mr. Flash (the villain of the Kinks’ two earlier albums, Preservation Act 1 and Preservation Act 2) after facing humiliation inflicted by the school headmaster. Earlier this week Goldthwait told The Hollywood Reporter, ”It’s the genesis story of a supervillain set to music. It’s the story of the world’s most charming criminal and a realistic high school musical for all the kids who hate sugary, sweet, unrealistic high school musicals.” No word yet on whether there will be any involvement of the Trench Coat Mafia.
Others involved with the film have reported that the songs from the album will be rerecorded by cast members, and released as an album to accompany the movie. According to IMDB, Bobcat Goldthwait was a personal friend of Kurt Cobain, so who knows? He very well may be capable of calling up some serious talent for this movie.

Not the Ramones and not even Who By Numbers…Let’s celebrate mid-70s Ohio with Mike Cera..
Yes!!!!!!……..This can be cool. Great forgotten Kinks LP!!!!(along with “Soap Opera”)
Now………..Lets see if it ever gets made
This was my favorite album in grammar school, before I got into other British pop super groups like The Who, Pink Floyd, etc. It is still one of my favorite thematic rock albums, totally unique and hip. Ray, Dave, and the other schoolboys put their unmistakable stamp on “Schoolboys”, and for me it is timeless. I hope that the movie does get made, and I hope that it does the album justice… that is a tall order to fill indeed.
Great news! Especially if it’s well made and brings Preservation as a sequel.
With Ray involved I doubt it will be disappointing.
I hope they don’t make the mistake of trying to substitute some of those original album recordings such as School Days, The Hard Way, Headmaster and No More Looking Back with more “modern” versions of the same just for the movie. They can try but there’s really no substitute.
I saw both Preservation and Schoolboys in NYC bring on the film.I’ll be there!!!
