I met Raymond Pettibon at the Rock Paper Scissors show in Santa Monica on May 1st of last year. Other luminaries at that show included Mike Watt, Flea, Lee Renaldo, and Gibby Haynes. If you’ve ever bought any seminal punk rock on the SST label, you’ve seen Pettibon’s work: The simple black and white illustration adorning classic album covers from Black Flag, the Minutemen, and fIREHOSE. His illustrations are hitting and brilliant metaphors for the scene that was the beginning of indie rock in So Cal in the ‘80s.
