After recently canceling his band’s European tour last week due to illness, sad news comes today that heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (of the almighty Black Sabbath, Elf, Rainbow, and his own band Dio) has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

In a statement issued to Blabbermouth.net by Dio’s wife Wendy, she relayed the message that he started treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic, assuring fans that he’ll be back on stage where he belongs, “after he kills this dragon.”

From her statement: “Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio. Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up.”

Get well soon, Dio! And for those celebrating Thanksgiving today, be sure to give thanks for the healing powers of metal.

Ronnie James Dio, Because of you I became a Rockn roll singer at the age of 15 and never stopped since. I would listen to your Elf, Rainbow and Sabbath albums for hours. You have been such a positive influence on me as a writer, musician and believer. Now I am 44 years old and have a 9 year old son who loves to sing. and guess what he is singing to!!! With love and light be well!! Long live Ronnie James Dio xoxo
