The Decemberists played a special one night “lottery show,” where the songs played were picked at random by a master of ceremonies, played by John Wesley Harding. In less capable hands the whole affair could have become quickly tiresome, but both the band members and John Wesley Harding injected just the right amounts of theatrics, playfulness, and suspense to keep the show rolling along, even without a setlist. This shot was taken during the first song of the night, “Yankee Bayonet.” Colin Meloy was joined on vocals by Laura Veirs, who also sings the part on record and was conveniently opening.
