This Just In: Steven Tyler Is the Rainbow
[via Paste magazine]
Or so he says. Not four or five days ago, it was aerosmith-and-other-news/” target=”_blank”>reported that Steven Tyler was to quit Aerosmith, and Aerosmith was going to go look for another frontman. But even then the whole thing wreaked of possible untruths. I mean, the band’s been around for forever. How would the rest of them just go on like that?
Then, this past Tuesday night at New York’s Fillmore, Tyler made a surprise visit at Joe Perry Project’s concert. Tyler reportedly got up on stage and said, “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith… Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I, motherfucker, am the rainbow!” The band then launched into “Walk This Way.”
Apparently Perry had no idea that was going to happen, according to a recent report of such over at Rolling Stone. And also, but… the news has changed AGAIN, with the most recent news saying that Tyler wants to take two years off while the band continues on.
Confused? I sure am. But I’m also just happy to hear that Tyler said he is the rainbow. It’s almost like that one time John Lennon said he was the walrus. Guess what? I’m the telephone! Your fans are calling to tell you that they’d almost certainly be fine with the band just calling it a day so as to leave your legacy somewhat in tact… or, you know, somehow find a way to rectify what studio album you shall last leave them with. It seriously can’t be the ridiculously titled album, Honkin’ on Bobo.

Joe Perry is behaving like a child! And he is delusional to think anybody would pay money to see or hear Aerosmith perform with a different singer – it just won’t happen. There is no Aerosmith without Steven Tyler – Joe Perry may be able to be replaced, but NOT Steven Tyler. I am really turned off by Joe Perry’s behavior, he is doing himself a great disservice – if the rest of the guys can’t find something else to do for a mere 2 years, then they should probably call it a day.
Isn’t Joe out promoting his solo album?
i agree. joe has been really acting like a crybaby lately. like when steven broke his shoulder. he didn’t even act like he was concerned. he only cried about them not being able to play. maybe he needs the money real bad. steven is aerosmith. the voice is the main thing. any guitar player can be changed. but you can’t change the voice of the songs. i wouldn’t pay to see aerosmith without steven. really i have only gone to their concerts to see steven.
Yeah, you could put any guitarist in there. Like Buckethead. He’s awesome. He wears a bucket…on his head. Or Yngwie Malmsteem. His career could probably use a boost these days. Now that would be awesome: ruin a quintessential rock guitar sound with some shred-for-hire. Ttruth is these guys shoulda thrown in the towel years ago. They were better in the 70s when they were on drugs. Just stop. The world doesn’t need any more ballads like “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.”
Actually, Aerosmith tried it without Joe Perry and it flopped. I’m not saying a Steven Tyler-free Aerosmith would work either. I’m just saying that Aerosmith is Tyler/Perry the same way the Stones is Jagger/Richard. And like Jagger/Richard, Tyler/Perry should have hung it up about 20 years ago. Can we find some CURRENT hard rock bands to talk about now, please?
