Daryl Hall Doesn’t Enjoy Music, Never Really Has

Can’t go for that? Yeah, seriously. After all the unavoidable ’80s pop and soul joy, not to mention that glorious hair and mustache combo that is Hall & Oates, in an interview with The Onion’s The A.V. Club, Daryl Hall goes on record stating that he’s never really enjoyed music, even from a listener’s perspective, since he was 2 years of age. Apparently, it’s been strictly a professional business situation for him.

While it’s certainly somewhat understandable that a job can take something away from the experience, even cool stuff like making hit music and gracing people with pipes that are smoother than silk, it’s really hard to imagine that the guy who sang songs like “Maneater”, “Private Eyes”, and “I Can’t Go for That” didn’t experience at least a little bit of fun from some part of the process. It’s almost pretty damn unfathomable, actually. Man, seems like someone needs a big dose of perspective. Mind over matter, Daryl!

Anyway, check out a snippet of the interview after the jump.

Daryl Hall: I never enjoyed music.

AVC: Never?

DH: No. I’ve been a professional since I was 2 years old. It’s work. I come from a musical family, my mother was in a band… music to me was hard work. It was learning how to be in front of people, and how to deal with audiences. Practice, constant practice with instruments. It was never what most would call a pleasurable experience.

AVC: Even now, you’d say that?

DH: More so now even than then. I’m a professional musician. I have been my whole life. When people are born into the arts, they don’t tend to see art as pleasure, they see it as work.

Read the entire interview with both Hall & Oates over at The A.V. Club.

I dunno. I mean, it certainly appears as though he had some fun shooting the video for “Private Eyes”…

Sometimes a great performer or shall I say artist is never satisfied with his work. No matter how good the song and performance is perceived by the throngs of people, he strives to be greater. This inner call for sublime perfection is the force of creating something special in music, lyrics and presentation. All the gifted people encounter the frustration and labor to achieve their greatneaa for without the hard work there would be no greatness.

Will you people get off this mustache crap already? It’s been 12 years, let it go.
