The Hold Steady as a touring rock band (the last of a dying breed?) are a joy to behold and an equal delight to photograph. Wired frontman Craig Finn, part raconteur bluesman/part inebriated preacher, outplays singers half his age and is a blur of expressions, exaggerated movements, and pure elation. This night had special significance, too, as it was the curtain call on a year beset by illness and show cancellations, in the week before Christmas. It was also the biggest headline show of their career so far—they were pretty much bouncing off the walls. It was one of those nights where you’re grateful for the storage capacities of digital media; I took hundreds of shots. This was my favorite
