R. Crumb

R. Crumb
1969, San Francisco
Photography by Baron Wolman

This black-and-white shot of a sheepish-looking R. Crumb captured in San Francisco in 1969 captures a moment during an age defined by free thought and progressive movement, of psychedelic artwork and a vibrant, resistant counterculture. As a pioneer in the comic world underground, Crumb is hugely credited for his graphic, satirical representations of American life, and the characters he created are among the most well-known and celebrated in the comic world, many of them featured in his famous Zap Comix series that was born in the Bay in 1968. As the first photographer for Rolling Stone, Baron Wolman was a fixture on the alternative culture’s landscape, documenting all the biggest players and contributors of the day, as is represented here with his candid shot of R. Crumb.
