Canned Heat, Siegel-Schwall Band
December 8-9, 1967
Denver Dog (Denver, Colorado)
Artwork by Bob Fried

Canned Heat and the Siegel-Schwall Band played the Denver Dog in December of 1967, less than a month before the Family Dog closed shop in Denver. As is evident in this vividly-hued poster, artist Bob Fried was notable for conveying the feeling of being on LSD, similar to much of the other artwork from the flower power ’60s. Trained as a commercial artist, Bob Fried came to San Francisco from New York to study at the Art Institute and work as a freelance designer. In 1966, he bore witness to the psychedelic art movement that was flourishing throughout the Bay Area. Encouraged by premier poster artist Victor Moscoso, whom he met at the Art Institute, he began to create his own posters. Canned Heat had just released their self-titled debut record at the time of this show and made the trek from their hometown of Los Angeles to play their gritty blues rock before Denver’s burgeoning hippie community.
