Rock Art Rock: Issue 2.26
Willie Nelson
February 21-22, 2001
Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco
Artwork by Joel Elrod
Joel Elrod’s somewhat twisted representation of Willie Nelson is captured on this poster promoting a 2001 set of shows at the Fillmore Auditorium. Willie’s well known affinity for smoking the ganja is on display here, and Elrod fittingly put him at home in front of a barn with grass growing all around. A barefoot, freakish caricature of Willie himself sits in the middle, setting a bird on fire with his guitar. Hmmm… a symbolic image for the environmental activist and nod to his heroic attempts to save family farms? Elrod is known for his irregular line drawings and rich, muted colors, and this poster for Willie Nelson is an apt demonstration of his unique and remarkable concert art.
