Rock Art Rock: Issue 2.20

Elliott Smith
March 1st and 2nd, 1999
Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco
Artwork by Frank Wiedemann

Even today, the Fillmore carries its longstanding tradition of giving away posters at the end of concerts, which patrons collect upon exiting the double front doors at the bottom of the steps. This Elliott Smith poster, created by BGP artist Frank Wiedemann, was created to commemorate the San Francisco stop of his ’99 tour, and showcases the poster artists’ use of rich hues and ethereal imagery. Smith had released his fantastic major label debut, XO, the year prior on Dreamworks, and was slowly gaining widespread recognition due to his aching lyrics and crystalline sigh of a voice. This poster, while perhaps too bright and buoyant to truly embody Smith’s moody aesthetic, nevertheless honors the singer-songwriter, and reminds us of the days when he was still here to play for us.
