Rock Art Rock

Martha and the Vandellas
May 19-20, 1967, Fillmore Auditorium
Artwork by Bonnie MacLean

Bonnie MacLean was one of the most visible members of Bill Graham’s staff, starting her career at BGP with tasks that included counting tickets and blowing up balloons. For Christmas in 1967, Bill Graham surprised her with paints and an easel, and from then on, MacLean was one of the more active contributors to the day’s golden age of concert art. This poster, BG064 in the series, illustrates MacLean’s early penchant for Gothic renditions, but the female face reflects the untrained artist’s real drawing talent and stands in stark contrast with the complexity of the background. Motown magicians Martha and the Vandellas headlined this Fillmore Auditorium show, and this is one of the first times the light show maestro is mentioned on the show poster.
