Rock Art Rock: Issue 2.09
Leon Russell
August 17, 1972, Berkeley Community Theatre
Photography by Michael Zagaris
Michael Zagaris is a photographer known for catching the most intimate of musical moments, and this candid, fluid picture of Leon Russell is just yet another snapshot into rock ‘n’ roll’s long and storied history. In the summer of ’72, Russell already had a slew of albums under his belt, and was a mastermind behind Joe Cocker’s famed Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. Always known for a kickass head of hair and seriously awesome beard, it’s Russell’s prolific work as a session man that has earned him loads of critical accolades… and even more famous musician friends that he’s worked with over the years. Snapped here at Berkeley Community Theater, this photograph is a visual token that harkens back to a sepia-toned time that has long since found its place into the hallowed hall of rock ‘n’ roll memories.
