Vincent Gallo: Selling Sperm but not Selling Out

by:

Courtesy of Vincent GalloOver the past 30 years Vincent Gallo has played in different bands, scored film music, and recorded an amazing solo release that prominently featured his delicate falsetto voice.

You wouldn’t think his vocal range is falsetto after seeing Chloë Sevigny suck his huge cock in The Brown Bunny, which Gallo wrote and directed.

One of my favorite films of all time, Buffalo ’66, was written, directed, and starring Vincent Gallo. He’s also had many roles in films like Goodfellas and Palookaville.

On his website, he offers his sperm for one million dollars, using his anatomy, down there, as a selling point that children bred from his sperm, and equipped with his gene pool, will have a chance at growing the same man organ.

There are assurances, like he is disease and drug free, for potential bearers of the children, as well as stipulations, like his right to refuse selling his sperm to people of dark complexions because he doesn’t want to be “part of that type of integration.”

Continuing the controversy, Gallo’s website discusses the history of his music career and the short-lived band he had with Jean Michel Basquiat, who he blames for the break up because Basquiat became famous. “Sometimes it’s good to be black,” Gallo says on his website regarding Basquiat’s success.

Many have found the website, as well as Gallo’s other actions, offensive. I had to ask him about the website.

“That stuff was very high-level, conceptual, philosophical prose, you see. I believe we’re all earthlings, and if we’re all earthlings, which is already a microcosm because we’re already all connected to the universe. But let’s reduce it to earthlings. Let’s take that narrow-minded point of view, that we’re all just simply earthlings… then calling yourself an African American or a homosexual or a vegan or a raw foodist or an American or any of these things, if you identify yourself in that way, in a sense, you’re in total disconnection. I mean, on some level those maps create references that governments use, but for people to buy into those stories seems really small-minded. Celebrity, for example, is another disconnection, so my concept of those things on my website, the only way I can see those things having any significance, is in a humorous way. To me it’s very funny that people think of themselves more specifically than an earthling, for example. If I believe that everything is connected, then, for example, the President of the United States is a reflection of the people, the people are not a reflection of him. And if the President of the United States is a reflection of the people, then he is a reflection of the protestors because the protestors need that president so that they can exist in their egomania of protesting. And even though they sit and scream and hate and ‘We hate George Bush’, etc., etc., George Bush only exists because they have that need to hate. It’s not a peace celebration, it’s a war protest. You know, everything is ego-based.

“My internet site is a highly conceptual reference to that, both in a comic sense and a highly sophisticated conceptual sense. And for the record, no right wing republican, no bigot, no homophobe, no meat grower has ever reached out to me in a compassionate way ever. Ever. It’s only been the idealists, the socialists, the protestors, the activists who have written me the most offensive, hateful letters that I have ever read in my life. Those are the people that constantly dwell on the internet and on blogs and chat sites, insulting me relentlessly. Those are the people that are so caught up in their hate and their ego and their judgment that they can’t help themselves but reveal and reflect the horrible discomfort and hate that they’re investing so much energy in. And I’m just reflecting them back to them, and that’s interesting for me. Aside from that, if you can’t understand the concepts and the humor of that website, and you’re only response is to hate me, then that’s where you’re at today and I hope you grow as a person.”

Before interviewing Gallo I found out a friend of my wife killed herself by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge and I was in no mood for pretentious celebrity bullshit, which I had expected from Gallo. If he was going to be a dick, like I had assumed could easily happen, I was ready to end the interview and kill the article myself.

Instead, he surprised me with his congeniality and intelligence. I was glad that his website was a conceptual piece and even though it sparks of racism, it’s more of a drive of his disdain for racism as taken word for word from his quote above. Regarding his philosophy that everything is connected leads me to believe he has studied Buddhism.

Gallo is also known for his conservative political views and outspoken support for President Bush.

Since Gallo carries this baggage with him, that he has, for the most part, taken upon himself, and there are so many strong opinions on Vincent Gallo the celebrity, it seemed important to let him speak about one of his main sources of controversy before delving into his music career that has led up to his current project RRIICCEE.

Gallo continued discussing the public’s perception of him. “If you’re not coming from love and hope in your heart, then you’re nothing. If you’re coming from ego, there’s no truth in ego and self-glorification, those things are small-minded gestures of human beings and they’re part of you being caught up in the person you learned to be and not the person you really are. And that’s certainly not the goal and that’s certainly not the place to invest your energy as a person. And those things on my internet site are comical, conceptual references to that kind of thinking, and for some reason, miraculously, they reflect that to people who buy into those stories so precisely. Just Google my name. Go on any blog and see the steaming hate against me. People who come from love don’t go on blog sites spewing hate. People who feel good about themselves and are the person they really are, not the person they learned to be, don’t protest, they don’t go out in hateful, egotistical protests. They come from love and celebration only, and those are the people that I try to connect with and that I relate to. That’s the kind of person I try to become. And I have to practice that every day because I’m not that naturally. I was raised a different way, and I have to struggle really hard to be that person. That’s what I can say about my internet. And to me, those are some of my most funny, creative works of art, and it’s baffling to me that they were so easily used to reflect so much hate in others around me. I thought they just seemed so obvious in what they were saying that I was a little disappointed that [people] took them in such another way like that. You know, I mean, it’s like, uh, wow. All I could say is wow. Wow.”

On his website where his sperm is for sale along with other services, like having sex for $50,000, there’s a photo of him in a sailor’s suit, kissing to the camera while delicately touching his appendage.

It’s kind of amazing how he refers to all these people as his friends and then totally discredits them. It’s honest, I suppose, but love? Hmm.

Why does he or anyone do anything for $…oh yeah wait a minute, I forgot YOU NEED IT TO LIVE! Bravo for an excellent article, and insight into one of showbiz’ most intriguing characters.

Why does he need to explain it?

    Belvedere isn’t Wal-Mart and it’s a Polish company.

If it was a Starbucks ad, then the question would be relevant. But a Vodka company? Give me a break.

Take away the philosophical bullshit and all you got is an ugly, wide-eyed, know-nothing asshole. Fuck you Vincent Gallo!

Wow. If you’re gullible enough to believe Gallo’s pseudo-intellectual, pretentious, philosophical bullshit as a weak defense for his blatant racism and elitism, then you’re really fucking stupid.

I’ve loved his Buffalo ‘66, but I regret to find that he is only an arrogant and hypocrite, whose main talent is snobish sneering

Celebrities are not public property. It is the work they do we should concider. The problem is people take it to personal. You feel offended by the person “Vincent Gallo”. You have an opinion of him, you even seem to hate him or love him. But why would you? He himself has nothing to do with your life. His work might affect you, his art may influence you. Let it. But it is a huge problem when you start believing that the person “vincent gallo” is of any importance to your life. Where are you then? in that story?

Yeah, he’s just full of himself. He reads like a nonsensical drivel spewing, narcissistic, modern day Jim Morrison.
