Rock Art Rock: Issue 1.43

David Grisman Quintet
July 19, 1997, Maritime Hall, San Francisco

Artwork and commentary by Jim Phillips

“This Maritime Hall poster was my attempt at doing a quintessential psychedelic rock poster, with a gypsy motif to celebrate David Grisman’s great works. In the classic rock poster, the lettering fills the void space of a figure, most classically of a woman. This image means more to me than usual because I appropriated the image from a live drawing of Dolly I had sketched on canvas. This was sort of a reunion, doing posters at Maritime Hall again, since I had left my art director position when the Family Dog involvement ended. I did get to hang out for a while with David Grisman backstage. I do enjoy appreciation of my work by those who inspire me to do it.”
