Mountain Girl
October 31, 1966, San Francisco State Acid Test
Photography by Gene Anthony
Few things embodied the changing tides of the ’60s like Mountain Girl standing before a psychedelic school bus. Captured here by the prolific lens of photographer Gene Anthony, Mountain Girl was one of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters (and mother of his child, Sunshine). She helped pioneer the psychedelic cultural movement, and ended up marrying Jerry Garcia. The flower power decade was in full swing, and this San Francisco State Acid Test on Halloween was a colorful and fitting way to ring in the celebration.
