Rock Art Rock: Issue 1.28

Metallica, Oakland Coliseum Stadium, Aug 31, 1985
Photography by Ken Friedman

Captured here by official BGP photographer Ken Friedman at one of Bill Graham’s famous Day on the Green day concerts, in 1985 Bay Area-based Metallica was still in their rock ‘n’ roll infancy. Long before the days of Some Kind of Monster and a lawsuit against Napster, James, Lars, Kirk, and Cliff were local heroes as they carved out a hard-rocking, metal sound, playing to thousands at this summer concert extravaganza.
