Rock Art Rock: Issue 1.27

MC5, Grande Ballroom, January 20, 1967
Artwork by Gary Grimshaw

Nothing spells out the Detroit rock community like MC5, the Grande Ballroom, and Gary Grimshaw. In ’67, MC5 were on the rise as forebearers of the punk scene, and as the Grande Ballroom house band, they played weekly to enthusiastic audiences. Grimshaw was there too, creating the loud, splashy concert art that perfectly accompanied their brash sound. Grimshaw, a Detroit native, was a staple in the burgeoning rock scene and had a vital role as primary poster and light show artist for the important venue. This poster, though psychedelic in its lettering, also projects a grand and rich quality that perfectly encapsulates the energy projected by the powerhouse band at this historical building.
