Rock Art Rock: Issue 1.06
BG 105, Jimi Hendrix Experience, 1968
Artwork by Rick Griffin
There are few images in rock ‘n’ roll that resonate quite like this Rick Griffin masterpiece, which was created to promote a 1968 Jimi Hendrix Experience show at the Fillmore Auditorium. Griffin discovered “The Eyeball” in a much more benign form—the 1950s auto detailing art of California pinstriper Von Dutch. He reworked it over time to become the winged, bloodshot figure parting a ring of fire with serpent-like tentacles. Known across the rock art world as BG105, this vibrant poster has become an image of seminal proportions, representing a time when the music was loud, the people naked, and the times uproarious.
